My husband, Fred van der Kraaij, and I lived in Liberia from 1975 till 1979. Our eldest son Anton was born in Elwa Hospital. In Monrovia Fred taught economics at the University of Liberia, and I worked at the Dutch Embassy. In 1978/79 we lived in Harper, Maryland County, where Fred wrote on his thesis on Liberia’ s Open Door Policy. In 1980 when Samuel Doe seized power in a bloody coup we happened to be in Monrovia, on our way to Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. In all, we spent 16 years in West Africa.
