Charlies

These Charlies came to our house to sell these “Water Spirits” or “Nitien.” These objects were cast in bronze using the lost wax method and probably originated in southeast Liberia.

What a remarkable photo. Was it taken in Nimba? I have seen several hundred of these “Water Spirits” over the past decade, but rarely all at one time as in your photo. The exact significance of this knobbed ring form remains to be determined. But typicallythe significance has to do with providing spiritual protection from “bad” supernatural forces. Hope to see more images!
