Ganta Leper Colony woodcarver with finished product

Author: Janice Flahiff

The Ganta United Methodist Mission had a “leper colony” that was managed by a Roman Catholic nun.
These men made their living by wood carving. They lived at this complex just north of the mission with their families.
Just before my Peace Corps service ended, I bought quite a few pieces from these men. Two pieces were “commissioned”, including a small statue of Mary.
The “leper colony” was reestablished along with the hospital sometime after 2004.
