I remember this. This picture must have been taken just a short time after the accident because it wasn’t long before they had covered all markings to let you know it was a Nigerian Airways plane.

This same type of accident took place while I was in Liberia 80-82 and I believe that it was the same airlines. Could we have the dates mixed up? Seems that it was a British instructor pilot with a Nigerian crew. There was a “failure to communicate” upon landing and the Nigerian pilot plowed it into the mud in front of Smell-No-Taste right up to the ditch of the airport rim road. A Sunday drive out to Roberts Field to view the plane stuck in the mud was a major attraction!

I was there also. I think the date was 19Dec78. Aircraft was making an intermediate stop on a LOS-ROB-JFK flight, and was landing in a heavy rainstorm, reportedly landed long and ran off into the mud. A/C sat at ROB for about 3 months for repairs to be able to ferry it to Italy for final repair.

I have several very close up photos of the plane, since it stopped right by the road, until a policeman saw me taking pictures and told me to stop. They later taped paper over the name so you couldn’t tell the airline name, but they did it to just cover the green, so it still spelled out the name, but in brown paper. I can share the photos if anyone interested.

I note that this accident shows up almost nowhere in official airline sites, and this is the first time I’ve seen it posted at all.
